Somehow, Alex and James’ story feels like the picture that we have always wanted to paint for soon-to-wed couples. Celebrate each other, be yourself and have loads of fun. We don’t know what brought them together but they are truly perfect for each other. They put aside the traditions of a typical wedding, choosing instead to walk a new and narrow path in their Converse sneakers, and celebrating their nuptials as a day for themselves.

They both love superheroes, playing games and doing crazy things together. So they built their wedding around that theme. The New Children Museum in San Diego was the perfect venue. The main colours that anchored the décor were bright shades like yellow, orange and pink. Alex and James were smart enough to bring in a wedding planner, and they must surely be thankful for that. With details like these, we wouldn’t recommend anyone with a full-time job try to DIY all this on their own.

Crazy things aside, couples like this give us hope, and remind us that somewhere out there is the person who will love and accept us as we are. The vows that Alex and James made to each other are a sign of that kind of love, and that high-five at the end? Surely there’s no other couple like them.

Comic Fans

Darth Vader. Funky Dali Photography. www.theweddingnotebook.com

As an avid fan of comics, illustrations, games and design, Lenny even has a special room dedicated to his passion. After getting their pre-wedding photos done, they decided to rope in Funky Dali to help conceptualise their wedding day. And what did Funky Dali propose? A superhero theme!

Everything from the décor to the wedding invites was based on that theme. The wedding was a very private occasion that only the closest friends and family witnessed, and although some of the guests were not surprised by the idea, they were stunned nevertheless to see Darth Vader and a Storm Trooper walk into the room.

This garden wedding ceremony held at the historical heritage mansion Carcosa Seri Negara was filled with tears and laughter. In the photographer, Zach’s, own words, “it’s definitely one of the most memorable weddings we’ve ever captured”.

We believe memories are made from the things that wedding couples put together. In this instance, the Yoon’s gorgeous dress was made by her friend Veralyne, who is a wedding gown designer.

Also, the garden décor and white helium balloons, as well as the bride’s vintage bags, were all collected during her many travels. The beauty of it all can only truly be seen when everything comes together.

An UP Inspired Adventure

Huei Min and Steven’s bridal portraits was inspired by the Pixar animation “UP”. A movie that speaks of adventures, dreams and love, it sets the exact right tone before a marriage. Great combination of colours, and most importantly, a fun-filled portraits session.

Bricks And Gown

The mixed materials that create this modern architectural beauty, especially the brick wall, really bring out the contrast between the white gown and the couple. Many photographers have shot here after they discovered this place, but Patrick has given it a new perspective.

Julia and James chose this venue right in the heart of Melbourne’s central business district because of its great cityscape. Julia and James wanted a warm, relaxed party and indeed they achieved that. It was a great celebration with family and friends. One of their friends even wrote a poem for them, titled ‘One Saturday in May’. Here’s an excerpt:

“So this is where it all starts
as a hundred stand in a circle around you today
(who would all do the same again tomorrow)
and there are more out there,
    swelling with pride
    that these two
    our two
will keep each other’s hearts glowing,
    warm and beating
    beyond 365 more nights
    but on
    and on
    and on
    and on…”

As the bride is from a Polish background, the couple also incorporated a few Polish touches into the wedding. Besides a Polish blessing, guests sang the traditional celebration song ‘Sto Lat’ all night.

As the photographer said, “It was at James and Julia’s wedding that I came to a revelation of what the statement ‘love is a friendship set on fire’ really means”.

PS3 Before Tea

This is so worth sharing because we’re not sure if we will ever find another bride playing PS3 in her gown and veil. Perhaps many of us have missed the point, and forgotten to enjoy and cherish every moment of our wedding day. Look at this couple bonding with their loved ones before the tea ceremony. Beat that!

Avillion Port Dickson wedding

A beautiful sunset beach wedding at Avillion, Port Dickson. It’s quite trendy nowadays for couples to use seashells for their beach weddings, but we love the added touch of green apples and white gerbera daisies. It made the whole set so much more interesting and lovely, and set just the right atmosphere for an intimate celebration with family and friends.

Damon: “The most beautiful moment for me was seeing my bride for the first time in her stunning white gown, walking down the aisle with her father. She simply took my breath away! It was also having our family and closest friends being such an integral part of the wedding ceremony. Having my best friend as our celebrant, and Pei Yen’s sister and brother-in-law as our emcees just topped it off. I also must say that Anna’s approach and professionalism were second to none, which made us both feel so relaxed and comfortable in front of the camera on our big day.

“We wanted to have a wedding that was a little bit different from the typical big, formal, western-style wedding and reception, and since we have so many beautiful beaches here in Malaysia, it wasn’t difficult making our decision. We were a little bit wary, as some beach weddings can look tacky, so we did a lot of research on locations and colour themes that would bring life and enjoyment to the clean white sand. We felt that apple green was fresh and modern, and was a perfect match with Avillion’s set-up on Tumasek Beach.”

The Post-Wedding Video: Dear Future

There are a lot of great wedding videos out there, and unless you’re from a creative background, it can be quite hard to outdo them.

But this simple and beautiful video approached things from another angle, which totally surprised us, and we loved it! The idea? A “time capsule” post-wedding video for Jo Lin and Bernard to remind them of the vows they made to each other.

If we could, we would make it a law for every married couple to have a “time capsule” video that they can watch on their anniversary every year. Mostly because as humans, we tend to be very forgetful creatures.

He made everyone laugh and cry at the same time, but not because he’s an entertainer. From the moment we saw Bernard on the verge of tears as his bride Jo Lin came down the spiral staircase of Hotel Maya, we knew it was going to be a very emotional affair.

We really wanted to put the wedding in perspective. That is why the vows meant everything to us. And to say our vows in front of our loved ones and close friends meant everything” – The groom

And indeed it was. Bernard and Jo Lin both wrote their own vows, each word true and from their hearts. With wedding vows like these, no one could deny the couple’s love for each other. Watch the video and you’ll know what we mean.

Tips: If you are thinking about writing your own vows, watch this video but don’t steal their lines. The point of customising your wedding vows is to write in your own words your promise to your spouse. Do prepare in advance and read it over and over again so that you’re familiar with it. On your wedding day, the piece of paper is only there to remind you, not for you to read from it. In fact, if you can, you should be looking into the eyes of your spouse!

We love Penang, with its old architecture, beaches and food (of course!), but what we see in these photos is a majestic side of the island that we’ve never seen before. Only through the lens of this great photographer… how fortunate it is for Jin and Ben to have found him.
