High school sweethearts who are finally tying the knot – this is the type of story that will make people believe in love once again. Watching them exchange vows moved their guests to tears. It was a simple ceremony and reception at a venue with a picturesque view. They DIY-ed most of their stationery, and even gave out homemade cranberry dark chocolate and pistachio treats as wedding favours. It is personal touches like this that make this wedding all the more beautiful. Thanks, Sayher, for sending over this lovely story.

Cheang Kee: “Some of the most unforgettable moments were seeing the bride walk down the aisle, us tying the knot after 11 years together, and witnessing the joy, tears and laughter of everyone throughout the ceremony and dinner reception.”

Woodland Wonderland

The stunning venue – a rustic garden with a chandelier – left us in a dreamy wonderland. Add to that a chilled evening filled with music, dance and laughter under the stars, and we are left wondering what could possibly top this wedding. Between the Alexander McQueen heels for the bride and the Fairuz Ramdan suit for the groom, you know this duo has great taste.

Funky Dali: “One of the most memorable moments was when the bride and groom were exchanging their vows. Clearly emotional, the groom said, “I promise to be nice to you, I promise to love you and I promise… I will bring you to Paris.” Even though they were embarrassed to admit it, some of the men were teary-eyed after that.”

Tips from the bride: “My advice for brides-to-be is to stay true to yourself. Do what you want, first and foremost, because it is your wedding and it should reflect who you and your groom are as a couple. Keep it simple and intimate if you can, because there is nothing better than celebrating the biggest day of your life surrounded by your closest family and friends who are all genuinely happy for you.”

A Romantic Backyard Wedding

What could be more romantic and meaningful than to get married in the backyard where you used to play as a little girl? Of course, not everyone is so fortunate to have a big garden, but Winnie’s garden ceremony looks gorgeous! Thanks, Andy Phe, for sharing this with us.

Keeping It Memorable At Shangri-la Sentosa Resort

You might have known a person for the longest time, but in one night, a conversation could change the course of history for you both. This is Jacqueline and Tris’ story. Their wedding was a beautiful garden ceremony that overlooked the sea, with a majestic tree and the perfect sunset, but more importantly, it was memorable for their guests who felt at the end of everything that they knew a little more about the newlyweds. That, we believe, is one of the purposes of a wedding day. Thanks, Chris Ling International Photographers for sending this set over.

Chris Ling International Photographers. www.theweddingnotebook.com

Jacqueline: “Growing up, I felt that there was a stigma on liking pink, as it was cooler to like blue. However, on this one day, I decided that I could be as girly as I wanted. My bridesmaids wore dresses in different shades of pink to create an ombre effect, and the décor, particularly the flower petals, the balloons and the pom-poms at the petal bar, where guests could mix rose petals in varying shades of pink, all reflected the theme. In lieu of a traditional guest book, we printed advice cards that had been customised for our wedding and pegged them onto strings of twine so that everyone could share in the fun.

“We took much care to ensure that our guests were entertained, and our programme was geared towards achieving that. We recorded video interviews with ourselves to share our back-stories and funny things about each other that our guests might not have known before the wedding.

“One of the most memorable moments was when my mum gave her speech! She’s a lecturer so when she gave her speech, it felt like she was giving a lecture because she repeated everything twice and kept asking the audience, ‘Right?’ The speech was so impactful and memorable that our guests are still talking about it. Another moment was the second march-in at the dinner reception! We decided to do a dance-in with the wedding entourage to the song ‘I Believe In A Thing Called Love’ by The Darkness. It was very special for the wedding party and for our guests.

“Most of all, I found the stolen moments of alone time the most special. The moment of stillness when my mum and my bridesmaids and I were waiting to walk down the aisle to Tris at my Holy Matrimony, and when Tris and I were standing outside the ballroom doors, waiting for the cue for our first march-in. All our loved ones were on the other side of the doors, wanting to celebrate us. And Tris and I managed to steal a private moment together, before plunging into the ballroom full of well wishers.”

Tips from the bride: “Start by dreaming big, and let your imagination take you as far as it can go. As your wedding date approaches, your ideas will whittle down to what is feasible and what is not, but don’t start out by limiting yourself over perceived expense or effort.”

An Invitation To Hawaii

Photo by Dennis Yap Photography*. www.theweddingnotebook.com

Dennis Yap got the opportunity to shoot a wedding in Hawaii last year and he’s generously shared the fruits of that trip with us. This isn’t your regular Hawaiian beachfront wedding; instead, it’s a cosy, intimate one. There were so many photos we had a hard time selecting just a bunch. We hope these give you a good overview.

Tiffany: “The best part of our wedding was being surrounded by the people we love, and the intimacy of being able to mingle and enjoy each and every guest. Being able to have our two daughters as a part of the ceremony, and having both sets of parents and grandparents there was lovely.

“I had our mothers and grandmothers help build my bouquet. As I walked down the aisle with my father, I was handed a rose by my mother and grandmother, and Shang-Yi’s mother and grandmother. When I reached the front, Shang-Yi’s father met my father and I to help tie the flowers into place while my father held the bouquet. We wanted to use this little ceremony to symbolise the union between our families. I also wore a diamond necklace made from my grandmother’s diamond ring and his grandmother’s diamond brooch.

“We wanted to have an outdoor wedding without it looking like the usual Hawaiian beachfront wedding, a venue with a lot of intimacy where we weren’t being watched from afar. The colours and flowers we chose were subtler and more natural, that would blend well into an outside setting. We wanted the overall feel of the event to be elegant and classy. I handmade all the invitations and had handwritten notes for each of our guests tucked within the guests’ place cards.

“My bridesmaids wore their own choice of black dresses and it turned out great. It is actually amazing that four out of the five bridesmaids were pregnant!”

Tips from the bride: “Take everything in stride. When planning becomes overwhelming, take a break and go back to planning a couple days later. On the day of the wedding, sit back, relax and breathe. Whatever happens or does not happen, it is not the end of the world. Remember that you are marrying your partner in life so focus on your love for each other, include your partner in the decision-making, and listen to his needs. It is not worth fighting before, during, and happily ever after the wedding!

Timeless Elegance

Wedding at Eastern & Oriental Hotel, Penang. Photo by Alextan Artworks. www.theweddingnotebook.com

This wedding was held at Penang’s two most sought-after venues – a beautiful white garden ceremony at E&O Hotel followed by a chic dinner reception at the Blue Mansion. We love the bridal party, the bridal car and, of course, the stunning bridal gown. This is another good example of how to keep a traditional essence without missing out on some fun. Lynn didn’t have a Pinterest board because she knew exactly what she wanted. With the help of her planner at Touching Hearts, her wedding was nothing short of awesome. Thanks, Alex and Crazy Monkey Studio, for capturing this precious day and sharing it with us.

Lynn: “I wanted an intimate feeling and so stayed away from ballroom weddings. Having it in a big city like KL would have meant the guests would be more scattered and getting everyone together would have been challenging with traffic. The experience would have been more about logistics. My mum is from Penang and Penang has such a charm about it; all the little boutique hotels that have been restored are full of character and are all within walking distance of each other, so Penang was a great fit for what I wanted.

“The Blue Mansion, also known as Cheong Fatt Tze, is a unique location; the colours are incredible and it’s got such a story! I wanted to have our wedding there in its authentic state, even if it was without air conditioning!

“E&O Hotel was also a natural choice because of the location. As the dinner reception was going to be in an Asian environment, I wanted the vows ceremony to be ‘western’ and light. That’s why I did it outdoors on grass with a minimal set-up – just a white tree!”

Tips from the bride: “Hire a wedding planner that you can see yourself working with and a good decorator, then focus on enjoying the wedding.”

Vintage Shabby Chic

A lovely navy blue and orange vintage garden wedding that exuded warmth and was filled with DIY touches put together by family and friends. Having grown up together for seven years, Pearlyn and Rongzhao’s relationship has seen both the joys and pains of life. Read more about their courtship on their wedding website here and check out these lovely images by AndroidsinBoots.

Pearlyn: “We wanted to keep things economical so we didn’t hire a wedding planner, but we did get help and advice from a wedding coordinator as well as from our friends. The décor contained elements of different aesthetics that we both like, shabby chic and vintage, and it was created with the help of AssembleHappinest and friends. When I saw the venue with all the décor and lights, and the lush greenery, I thought it looked just perfect. The beautiful outdoor wedding solemnisation was followed by a cocktail hour and live music played by our friends while the sun set over the gardens.

“The wedding invitations were genuine vintage postcards of the Singapore Botanic Gardens in the 19th century. Rongzhao thought it would be cool to use them as our wedding invites since that’s our venue, so we bought them online from the UK. We both like things that have a history and a story behind them, and are nostalgic for Singapore’s past. Our designer friend Hannah helped us put together the wedding invite, retaining the original vintage look. We inserted a map printed on special translucent paper and tied each invite with red and white baker’s twine. Each had names and addresses written with a calligraphic pen and came in a wax sealed envelope.

“My maid-of-honour was in Taiwan and saw a shop that sold chocolate squares in adorable wedding-themed packaging so she brought the favours all the way back. I also gave out Baci chocolates, which are not only delicious but also happened to fit my colour theme! They come with a quote on love inside the foil so they were perfect as wedding favours too.

“Due to our work schedules, we planned the wedding in about 5-6 months. It was an intense and busy time, and I think having pre-marital counseling helped us to put the focus on marriage and our love, rather than on the wedding itself, and we learned how to set our priorities. We are also grateful and thankful for all the help and support that came from our family, friends and wedding vendors that made our wedding beautiful and special.”

A DIY White and Green Outdoor Reception At Laguna

Erwin Leyros Photography. www.theweddingnotebook.com

St Gregory the Great Parish Majayjay is one of the oldest standing churches in the Philippines. The church and its surroundings are so beautiful that little needed to be done for the big day. For the reception, the couple filled the whole place with different white and green flowers.

We believe the key to managing your own DIY wedding is to keep the colour theme simple. White and green are two of our all time favourite outdoor wedding colours as they look effortlessly elegant. Honestly, we’re still in awe that the couple did all this on their own, including the favours for their guests. Thanks, Erwin Leyros Photography, for sharing this beautiful wedding with us.

We were hands-on from the planning to the design of our invitations, and even the décor that we used. One of the most memorable moments for us was during the ceremony, when we exchanged vows with each other.”

A Blissful Wedding At Paresa Resort, Phuket

Wedding at Paresa Resort, Phuket. Aidan Dockery Wedding Photography

Getting married at Paresa Phuket makes you feel like you are on top of the world, as it is perched high on the cliff side with a breathtaking panoramic view of the Andaman Sea. This is the perfect number of guests for a destination wedding. We like their reception on the platform next to the pool, under the open sky. It must have been quite an experience dining there during sunset, and with an unobstructed view of the fireworks at night.

Vintage Garden Wedding At Saujana

Dennis Yap Photography*. www.theweddingnotebook.com

We understand it is not easy to juggle work and wedding planning, all the more so if you are many miles away from home. Bee Fong and Eu-Wing are both doctors based in the UK, and for them to have a wedding back here in Kuala Lumpur is definitely not an easy task. Thanks to Bee Fong’s sister and their wedding planner, however, the couple got to chill and cherish the moment with their loved ones.

What a lovely garden wedding setup, generously filled with flowers and pretty details. The gorgeous arch beneath the tree, the cute little flowergirls who graced the aisle before the bride walked in… This is like a dream-come-true garden wedding. Dennis Yap, as usual, delivered a set of very genuine photos, and we love the expressions that were captured.

Bee Fong: “We wanted something stress-free and the theme reflected that – a relaxed garden wedding under the tree. The colour theme was soft pastel colours. The theme was followed through for the evening reception as well. My sister helped to coordinate the wedding but she is based in Penang. We left most of the designing to the wedding planner. We were quite chilled since that is the whole point of hiring a wedding planner.

“Initially I wanted a beach wedding but our families combined had over 900+ guests. So I thought a garden wedding would be nice. I had seen a few wedding videos and websites featuring Saujana Hotel. Also, it’s close to my house with an airport nearby and we didn’t like the idea of travelling to the city centre.

“Despite hiring a wedding planner, we managed to contribute our ideas and do what we wanted. On the day, everything went smoothly. We enjoyed ourselves and most importantly it was stress-free.”

Intimate Destination Ceremony

Photography by Angga Permana. www.theweddingnotebook.com

Photography by Angga Permana. www.theweddingnotebook.com

This was truly a dream wedding where family and friends were all at Panchoran Retreat, Ubud, to prepare for the big day. The atmosphere was filled with laughter, smiles and love. The bride, Laura, DIY and custom-made most of the details and décor herself, including her dress, the bridesmaids’ dresses, and even the beautiful hand-made tea towels for the guests to take home. It was a blessed day indeed with perfect weather.

Photography by Angga Permana. www.theweddingnotebook.com

Laura: “On the morning of our special day we woke to blue skies and the tweeting of birds throughout the valley – our very own ‘Love Wonderland’ was to become a reality. We created an intimate ceremony in a beautiful and special place surrounded by our most loved, and together, exchanged our written vows and made our promises to each other in the arms of the sacred Bodhi tree.

“As a couple, our commitment of love to each other was the most important part of the day, and as the heavens opened and the sun shone down, it couldn’t have been a more magical and perfect moment. That moment we were pronounced husband and wife!

“We turned around and everyone began to throw fresh rose petals as the Marvin Gaye song ‘You’re A Wonderful One’ started to play. It brings tears to my eyes even as I write about it, so thank you for making me go through it all again!

“A delicious banquet was served and all enjoyed many laughs and tears over stories of the bride and groom as we toasted to love and friendship. After dinner, guests were treated to an amazing Kecak fire dance performed by over 100 men from the local village. Wish lanterns were released into the darkness of the sky as many hoped for love and happiness in the years to come.

“The cake was a simple cake with white icing. The bride and groom cake topper was given to us by Dallas’ mother and father, having been bought in Germany on the announcement of our engagement, and there was also a silver shoe on there that had been on my grandmother’s wedding cake in the 1940’s.

“I drew and designed my bridal dress, then had a wonderful Italian lady make it for me in Brisbane. It is made of silk and chiffon. I hand-made the feather details on the hips and a feather headpiece to match the dress. I added a diamond vintage brooch to bring together the diamond cufflinks and the ring elements. The gold jewellery I am wearing on my head was made by one of my best friends, Tigerframe Jewellery, and I decided to wear it, as I liked the fact that it made me feel close to her as I took my final steps as a single woman.

“All the details were DIY by us and with the help of friends and family. It was beautiful to see the perfect setting we had imagined for so long created before our eyes. ‘A Love Wonderland’ – relaxed, festival vibe with a vintage and creative twist. Sentimental touches such as the photos of family and friends that couldn’t be there made it feel very special.”
