Making The World A Smaller Place

Stories by Integricity. www.theweddingnotebook.com

We really like this wedding because of the beautiful details. The bride took inspiration from her favourite Kate Spade bag, which is navy blue with little gold trimmings. And don’t get us started on how much we adore her ‘kebaya’ dress, the bridesmaids’ cheongsams, and how they incorporated the brocade lace pattern from the cheongsam into their wedding invitations and printed goods. We love how it all worked out. Thanks to Stories by Integricity for sharing this story.

Hui Yoong: “My attire for the church ceremony was an ivory white lace wedding kebaya with a soft gold songket skirt woven on a grey background. My bridesmaids had on navy blue Shanghainese-styled cheongsams with gold trimming and gold peep toe shoes. Each wore a gold Kate Spade bangle that was overlaid with a navy blue strip and ivory white polka dots, something I chanced upon overseas.

“I used the same fabric as my wedding ‘kebaya’ skirt for elements in everyone’s outfits, so they would all share a common bit: beaded, leaf-shaped gold fabric for the bridesmaids’ hair pieces, suit jacket handkerchiefs for the groom and his men, the waist sash sewn onto the flower girls’ dresses, and the ‘palu’ (scarf) that went with the page boys’ Indian ‘kurta’ outfits.

“All the lace and fabric for my wedding ‘kebaya’ and the girls’ cheongsams were purchased in Jakarta. The selection of materials there is amazing, and the workmanship for the sewing and beading of my dress was done spectacularly at a fraction of the cost I would have paid to have it done in KL.

“The cheongsams were made locally in KL by a 71-year-old lady in Razak Mansions, Sungei Besi. She made the mandarin buttons herself, and started out in her trade in Petaling Street when she was 17!

“The church was our choice, the dinner reception venue was really our only option given our capacity and dates – book as early as you can, is my advice! The cathedral was something special – it is a simple but beautiful structure that makes you stop and think for a while about its history, what it represents, and how you should conduct your life after you step out through the doors.

“The greatest thing about our wedding was having all our friends and family from all over the place in one room. Seeing them making friends with each other and keeping in touch even after the wedding, we love that all our worlds collide and are getting even smaller!”

One of the most meaningful pieces of advice from the bride: “Recognise that it is his wedding too, and to a certain extent, your parents’. Both Ash and I learnt a lot about each other, for example, he could not care less if there were no flowers at all at the wedding, whereas I could not care less whether or not there was a cool wedding car. You have to realise that everyone has different expectations and preferences, and you can’t please everyone, but you also need to decide which things are worth fighting for.

“People won’t remember the flowers and the décor years down the road, but they remember whether the food was bad, whether they had a good time, and how much they laughed. Try to understand why your parents request particular ceremonies and that certain guests be present – when we sat down and heard what they had to say and why, we realised that we actually agreed on the importance of certain cultural aspects, and it added to the significance of the day!

“Obviously there will be things everyone may not agree on as well – like me wanting black tablecloths which my Chinese mother had some reservations about – so there’s a lot of stakeholder management involved, and a lot of redirecting everyone’s focus on the more critical tasks, like getting the table arrangements sorted!”

A Beijing Love Story

Bridal portraits in China. Photography by Metrophoto. www.theweddingnotebook.com

We know the difference between a couple doing a destination wedding in a foreign land, and a couple in a familiar place filled with their stories and memories. There is a kind of connectedness to the place that can be seen in the photos.

Fennie and Halim are from Indonesia, but the couple chose to have their bridal portraits taken in Beijing because that’s where they first met, fell in love and decided to be together forever.

In the beginning, Fennie was annoyed with Halim for being so picky about their bridal portraits photographer. They went through many months of looking at different photographers, but never thought they’d have to settle with one from outside of Indonesia.

When they stumbled upon Metrophoto, however, they instantly fell in love with Oly’s work.

We like how they intentionally didn’t shoot on the Great Wall of China, but explored other locations in Beijing. We also like the extra touch of traditional Chinese theatrical makeup, which apparently was Fennie’s idea. It is beautiful.

A Quiet Affair At Four Seasons Resort Langkawi

WeFreeze Photography. www.theweddingnotebook.com

We thought we’d seen small weddings, but this takes the cake. WeFreeze Photography was introduced to this couple by a friend. We love the casual shoot and how the couple just lazed on the hammock.

Teresa: “It was a small, intimate wedding, just the two of us and my parents, who were also our official witnesses. We’re Portuguese; it was our first time in Malaysia. We have a Malay friend who says wonderful things about Malaysia, so we knew it was worth the visit.

“At the same time, we were looking for a venue and a country where we could be married legally instead of just having a symbolic ceremony. We fell in love with the Four Seasons Resort Langkawi when we visited their website, and we couldn’t have found a more beautiful and idyllic place to celebrate our wedding!”

A Surprise Proposal

Surprise proposal in Singapore. Multifolds Photography. www.theweddingnotebook.com

No pressure, all you other guys out there, but this is really sweet. Girls never expect their man to sing for them, write them love letters or cook them a candlelight dinner, and because it is so unexpected, it’s sure to bring forth tears.

Charlotte was blindfolded from Big Splash at East Coast Park all the way to the mystical tent lit up with fairy lights and filled with Polaroid photos of moments she and Desmond have shared, as well as a long handwritten love letter. When a man makes the extra effort like what Desmond did, our hearts melt and of course we will all shout, “Marry him!”

We will let Multifolds Photography photos tell the story.

Once in a while, we’ll come across very happy people whose happiness is contagious. Joy and Gelo are two such people. They wanted to have fun and do a relaxed shoot, and we love it!

Look at the colourful balls floating in the pool. We hope that by now, you’re realised that a pool is just a pool until you add personal touches and character to it. This couple made the pool theirs. This is another set of colourful and great photos by Cherryblocks Photography.

Intimate Destination Ceremony

Photography by Angga Permana. www.theweddingnotebook.com

Photography by Angga Permana. www.theweddingnotebook.com

This was truly a dream wedding where family and friends were all at Panchoran Retreat, Ubud, to prepare for the big day. The atmosphere was filled with laughter, smiles and love. The bride, Laura, DIY and custom-made most of the details and décor herself, including her dress, the bridesmaids’ dresses, and even the beautiful hand-made tea towels for the guests to take home. It was a blessed day indeed with perfect weather.

Photography by Angga Permana. www.theweddingnotebook.com

Laura: “On the morning of our special day we woke to blue skies and the tweeting of birds throughout the valley – our very own ‘Love Wonderland’ was to become a reality. We created an intimate ceremony in a beautiful and special place surrounded by our most loved, and together, exchanged our written vows and made our promises to each other in the arms of the sacred Bodhi tree.

“As a couple, our commitment of love to each other was the most important part of the day, and as the heavens opened and the sun shone down, it couldn’t have been a more magical and perfect moment. That moment we were pronounced husband and wife!

“We turned around and everyone began to throw fresh rose petals as the Marvin Gaye song ‘You’re A Wonderful One’ started to play. It brings tears to my eyes even as I write about it, so thank you for making me go through it all again!

“A delicious banquet was served and all enjoyed many laughs and tears over stories of the bride and groom as we toasted to love and friendship. After dinner, guests were treated to an amazing Kecak fire dance performed by over 100 men from the local village. Wish lanterns were released into the darkness of the sky as many hoped for love and happiness in the years to come.

“The cake was a simple cake with white icing. The bride and groom cake topper was given to us by Dallas’ mother and father, having been bought in Germany on the announcement of our engagement, and there was also a silver shoe on there that had been on my grandmother’s wedding cake in the 1940’s.

“I drew and designed my bridal dress, then had a wonderful Italian lady make it for me in Brisbane. It is made of silk and chiffon. I hand-made the feather details on the hips and a feather headpiece to match the dress. I added a diamond vintage brooch to bring together the diamond cufflinks and the ring elements. The gold jewellery I am wearing on my head was made by one of my best friends, Tigerframe Jewellery, and I decided to wear it, as I liked the fact that it made me feel close to her as I took my final steps as a single woman.

“All the details were DIY by us and with the help of friends and family. It was beautiful to see the perfect setting we had imagined for so long created before our eyes. ‘A Love Wonderland’ – relaxed, festival vibe with a vintage and creative twist. Sentimental touches such as the photos of family and friends that couldn’t be there made it feel very special.”

We love seeing photographs of streets in Hong Kong; they capture a beauty we rarely are able to see when we’re walking along them. We knew there was something interesting about this couple when we first saw this set of photos. And you’ve got to love this combination – a Japanese and an American who decide to have their photoshoot in Hong Kong. They both like the old architecture, buildings and streets in the city.

SiuMing.Photo: “I spent some time researching new locations that I’d never photographed before and I was so excited. Unfortunately, it was a rainy day. So we improvised and moved inside the fruit market at Yau Ma Tei. The shots taken there turned out really good.”

A Wedding Worth Revisiting

Jenny Sun Photography. www.theweddingnotebook.com

We imagine many men were heartbroken when the news went out that the beautiful and talented Sonia was getting married, and even more so now that Janice, her identical twin sister, has also tied the knot. We don’t share the same sentiment; we’re overjoyed that they have both found the love of their lives. Jayesslee is probably one of the first few YouTube stars that we actually loved. They’re so talented they actually make ‘Gangnam Style’ sound bearable.

For those of you who don’t know, Andy is actually their drummer and manager. This is one beautiful wedding – every moment of it. The bridesmaids were gorgeous in coral colours, and their dog got to be one of the coolest ring bearers in town. The hundreds of white balloons ascending up into the sky, and the couple’s loved ones sitting in the wide open field enjoying the night together. For all this, we have Jenny Sun and her team to thank.

A Decade Of Love

Maybe you are married and wondering why you are still checking out wedding websites every other day. Perhaps you have a lot of things you wish you had done. No worries, your 10-year anniversary can be your next excuse to put on a huge celebration, or make it five years. We love the sand art here, it’s inspired us to create something the next time we’re on a beach.

Norris: “All we wanted was to have a small, romantic and intimate ceremony, and bring our friends to the shores of Boracay. This was supposed to be our 10th year celebration. No frills. No fireworks. We did not fret over little details. The amazing location took care of everything. It was relaxed and casual with lots of love. Our good friends and family were there to witness it. It was perfect.”

Tips from the bride: “Have a budget and stick to it. If you are having a destination wedding, hire a local wedding planner!”

Here we go again, talking about how typography can really change your whole wedding day style. Both Tiffany and Mark are designers, and Mark is actually a typographer too.

We’ve lost count of how many designers’ weddings we have featured. Their refusal to conform to the norm always catches our eye when we see one of their weddings. There’s always a strong message and concept that carries through, and it’s such a joy to see them share their creativity with their loved ones.

This couple wed on 09.10.11 in Palm Springs, thus the iconic logotype “Nine.Ten.Eleven.” They rented the entire Movie Colony Hotel in Palm Springs, and used it as a blank canvas for their art. You can see it doesn’t look dated at all because good designs last for some time. The simple, clean typography also definitely helped. Mike Arick Photography did an awesome job of capturing all the details.

Mark: “Nine.Ten.Eleven., as we referred to it, became the general theme for the event. The location choice – Palm Springs, CA – gave us inspiration for our bright yellow colour palette and the wedding title, ‘A Celebration in the Desert’.

“We are both graphic designers so we created a bunch of fun stuff to go along with the ceremony and reception. A few of the things we created were waterjet-cut invitations, custom screen-printed placemats, and balloons that were made for our photobooth.”

Personalised Vintage Themed Wedding

We Do Photography & Design. www.theweddingnotebook.com

Determined not to have a ‘cookie cutter’ wedding, this couple went all out for an old-fashioned feel, including with a vintage car, fascinators and hats, all on this historical plot of land – Erskine College in Island Bay, Wellington. It is a former girls’ boarding school, currently used often for events. Thanks to We Do Photography & Design for sharing this set of photos with us.

Nikki, the creative one of the duo, tried to personalise things as much as she could, including her wedding dress and the stationery. Maybe it is the designer part of us speaking, but we think typography really sets the tone and mood in an event. Here, the font choice was perfect, and see how beautifully it was used to label each table, which were all streets of significance in this couple’s lives, embellished with funny anecdotes.

We also love how the programme sheets were printed on Kraft paper, which went really well with their vintage brown look. People should so totally start exploring paper stock – they actually might not cost more and they make a great amount of difference.

Having a small wedding seems to be an unattainable dream in Asia, which is probably why more brides make it a point to plan engagement parties these days. It gives you the space to do some DIY stuff and be creative. Here is one such party, complete with all the DIY ideas from Pinterest here.

Jit Min: “I wanted something bright and fun while he wanted something cool. After much research, we decided to go with yellow and grey with a polka dot pattern. It was all good in the beginning, then halfway through we just got more excited and started adding more and more things. But it turned out great! Our families and friends helped with the décor arrangements.

“Everything was memorable for us – the exchanging of rings, not to mention our ‘first-kiss’. It was a good time with family and close friends, some of which we had not seen for a long time.”
