Love Stories

Reliving High School Days

Edwin Tan Photography, Armadale Weddings. www.theweddignnotebook.com

This couple wanted to have their bridal portraits taken back at their secondary school. It must have been hilarious to be back in their old classroom and recall all that familiar chaos. How we got away with some of the stuff we used to do still baffles me. It’s easy to feel nostalgic about school in hindsight, now that we no longer have homework, early rises and exams. But what Jacqueline and Chin Teik might not realise is how these photos with their bridal party have also created a new chapter of memories. Someday, they will look back at these wonderful shots by Edwin of Armadale Weddings and reminisce about the fun they had that day.

If you read the 2014 wedding trends story in our latest issue, you’d know that pink is making a comeback, while black, previously a taboo colour for weddings, is also on the rise. This wedding is a perfect example of the two colours combined. Maybe it’s coincidence but we love how the black and white stripes on the ribbon go so well with the cathedral. Draw inspiration from your venue and your décor will fall effortlessly into place. Kudos to the absolutely great team behind this wedding – wedding planner Patricia with The Photoz and Wishing Tree. Check out the dinner reception here.

Deborah: “We chose the simple and classic palette of black and white as our theme then incorporated shades of powder pink and light green into everything. We found black and white to be a delight to work with. We used black and white stripes and polka dot ribbons in our bouquets and corsages, which made a wonderful statement against the beautiful church architecture. It was so easy to keep things classy and also very ceremonious! The venue for our ceremony was an obvious choice: the beautiful St Mary’s Cathedral – where my parents were married and where we share so many memories.”

A Love Story Remake

There are many ways to share your love story. Some people revisit special places but it can be quite time consuming, so we like how this couple built a similar set instead. And rather than use a split screen, they had a ‘split’ in between them, which was pretty awesome. Brilliant work from the Greentomato team!

Vintage Jets And Props

Photography by Boudoir Le Blanc. www.theweddingnotebook.com

Photography by Boudoir Le Blanc. www.theweddingnotebook.com

Inspired by their all-time favourite movie ‘Top Gun’, Crissy and Joe included vintage jets and props in their bridal portraits. Boudoir Le Blanc perfectly captured their contagious love and laughter, so much so that we fell in love with them just looking at the photos. Such a lovely couple!

Crissy: “Our bridal portraits were really exciting since we got to take our photos with vintage helicopters and planes. Our set was well-styled by our photography team and it felt nostalgic to be inside the armed forces camp since I used to live in Camp Aguinaldo. We had so much fun doing our shoot with Boudoir Le Blanc! It was a romantic setting in Villamor Airbase with the drizzling rain in the background – a sweet contrast to the masculine helicopters and planes. There was a vintage vibe to the photoshoot as we love old movies, vintage planes and the movie ‘Top Gun’.”

Bohemian Bash

Samuel Goh Photography. www.theweddingnotebook.com

With the unpredictable weather in Singapore, Nosh is a brilliant space – open-air yet sheltered just in case the weather decides to be less kind. Even in such a simple dress, Katrina looked absolutely beautiful. It’s nice to see such a light-hearted ceremony and reception. To illustrate their happy and fun nature, as well as their love for the reality show Survivor, the couple customised shot glasses with the words “I survived Isaac and Katrina’s wedding” for their guests. We’re really glad Samuel Goh shared this beautiful bohemian wedding with us.

Tips from the bride: “Time and the Internet are your best friends. If you take the time and effort to research and source, you can get almost anything and everything online. If the venue allows it, have an after-party there too. People tend to remember the beginning and end of an event, so remember to end the night on a high note!”

Endless Possibilities

Seriously, there is no reason for us to not like Funky Dali. They continually surprise us with new locations and are always overflowing with ideas. This is one of their latest bridal portrait shoots, and the added illustrations that were inspired by the couple’s life really caught our attention. A set of photos that is guaranteed to leave you with a smile.

Victor: “My cousin told me to ‘check out Funky Dali; they’re really “you”’, and the moment I heard the music they used for their videos/slideshows, I knew I’d found ‘the one’. We didn’t know what to expect, what with their crazy, funky ideas. Most of them were spontaneous and random. Be prepared for ‘interesting’ locations!”

A Romantic Rustic Eco Chic Wedding

Photo by Marlon Capuyan Photography. Event Styling by Cuckoo Cloud Concepts. www.theweddingnotebook.com

Without a wedding planner and with only 60 days to prepare, Cheeky and Shea pulled off a pretty awesome peach and green rustic party. Her dress looked awesome with that gold sash, and that garden overlooking a beach was downright romantic and truly every girl’s dream. Thanks, Marlon Capuyan for sharing this lovely wedding with us.

Cheeky: “Everything was memorable that day, but the most memorable for me was exchanging vows of commitment with the man that God has so cleverly chosen for me, before Him, our family and very close friends. I had never been so happy in my entire life. I couldn’t stop smiling from ear to ear the entire time.”

Tips from the bride: “When preparing for the wedding, don’t forget to prepare for marriage. Better yet, focus more on the latter since it’s for a lifetime.”

Timeless Elegance

Wedding at Eastern & Oriental Hotel, Penang. Photo by Alextan Artworks. www.theweddingnotebook.com

This wedding was held at Penang’s two most sought-after venues – a beautiful white garden ceremony at E&O Hotel followed by a chic dinner reception at the Blue Mansion. We love the bridal party, the bridal car and, of course, the stunning bridal gown. This is another good example of how to keep a traditional essence without missing out on some fun. Lynn didn’t have a Pinterest board because she knew exactly what she wanted. With the help of her planner at Touching Hearts, her wedding was nothing short of awesome. Thanks, Alex and Crazy Monkey Studio, for capturing this precious day and sharing it with us.

Lynn: “I wanted an intimate feeling and so stayed away from ballroom weddings. Having it in a big city like KL would have meant the guests would be more scattered and getting everyone together would have been challenging with traffic. The experience would have been more about logistics. My mum is from Penang and Penang has such a charm about it; all the little boutique hotels that have been restored are full of character and are all within walking distance of each other, so Penang was a great fit for what I wanted.

“The Blue Mansion, also known as Cheong Fatt Tze, is a unique location; the colours are incredible and it’s got such a story! I wanted to have our wedding there in its authentic state, even if it was without air conditioning!

“E&O Hotel was also a natural choice because of the location. As the dinner reception was going to be in an Asian environment, I wanted the vows ceremony to be ‘western’ and light. That’s why I did it outdoors on grass with a minimal set-up – just a white tree!”

Tips from the bride: “Hire a wedding planner that you can see yourself working with and a good decorator, then focus on enjoying the wedding.”

Dramatic Paper Wedding Dress

Paper bridal gown. Raymond Phang Photography. www.theweddingnotebook.com

We believe that every photographer has his/her own photography style so how do you distinguish a set of photos from that of a different couple if they were taken by the same photographer? Unless you let your photographer into your life, you won’t see any difference. Each couple has a story to tell, even if you aren’t looking for something too conceptual or staged.

The best thing about Raymond Phang and his team is that they are extremely good at interpreting each couple’s story and transforming it into a piece of art. Oftentimes that means taking on clients who aren’t afraid to explore different things. Sandora and Joshua, thanks for letting us share your pictures and may these photos remind you to always be adventurous in your journey ahead.

The burst of colour in these DIY and paper-themed bridal portraits is really perfect for this arty couple. The GIF stop-motions were carefully crafted, and they are by far one of our favourites. GIFs are the next big art form and we just love how this couple incorporated them into their portraits. Find out more about their thought process in our magazine.

In The Mood Of Love

For a moment we thought we were seeing screenshots of a Wong Kar Wai film. Though these are just stills, we feel as though they are moving in rhythm to an unfolding storyline. An artistic interpretation of a love story, we wish this were really a movie. It’s a little different from Adam’s usual style, which makes us wonder what else this man can do.
