Love Stories

Vintage Shabby Chic

A lovely navy blue and orange vintage garden wedding that exuded warmth and was filled with DIY touches put together by family and friends. Having grown up together for seven years, Pearlyn and Rongzhao’s relationship has seen both the joys and pains of life. Read more about their courtship on their wedding website here and check out these lovely images by AndroidsinBoots.

Pearlyn: “We wanted to keep things economical so we didn’t hire a wedding planner, but we did get help and advice from a wedding coordinator as well as from our friends. The décor contained elements of different aesthetics that we both like, shabby chic and vintage, and it was created with the help of AssembleHappinest and friends. When I saw the venue with all the décor and lights, and the lush greenery, I thought it looked just perfect. The beautiful outdoor wedding solemnisation was followed by a cocktail hour and live music played by our friends while the sun set over the gardens.

“The wedding invitations were genuine vintage postcards of the Singapore Botanic Gardens in the 19th century. Rongzhao thought it would be cool to use them as our wedding invites since that’s our venue, so we bought them online from the UK. We both like things that have a history and a story behind them, and are nostalgic for Singapore’s past. Our designer friend Hannah helped us put together the wedding invite, retaining the original vintage look. We inserted a map printed on special translucent paper and tied each invite with red and white baker’s twine. Each had names and addresses written with a calligraphic pen and came in a wax sealed envelope.

“My maid-of-honour was in Taiwan and saw a shop that sold chocolate squares in adorable wedding-themed packaging so she brought the favours all the way back. I also gave out Baci chocolates, which are not only delicious but also happened to fit my colour theme! They come with a quote on love inside the foil so they were perfect as wedding favours too.

“Due to our work schedules, we planned the wedding in about 5-6 months. It was an intense and busy time, and I think having pre-marital counseling helped us to put the focus on marriage and our love, rather than on the wedding itself, and we learned how to set our priorities. We are also grateful and thankful for all the help and support that came from our family, friends and wedding vendors that made our wedding beautiful and special.”

ROM At The Green Door

Photo by Andri Tei Photography. www.theweddingnotebook.com

Photo by Andri Tei Photography. www.theweddingnotebook.com

Dempsey Hill boasts a hip cluster of interesting wining and dining spaces that are extremely suitable for small, cosy weddings and ROMs. Hidden amongst the lush greenery of Dempsey is The Green Door, the perfect garden bar. With just a few simple touches, the place instantly becomes extremely cosy. We love how everyone just has such a fun and chill time, and look at those cocktails!

Andri: “William and Joelle’s love story is an interesting one. They met each other while on exchange at a university in Korea, after which they kept in touch and Joelle eventually followed William back to the Netherlands to work for a few years. Finally, they decided to settle down and get married in Singapore, tying the knot in a small, cosy bar with their close friends. It was a very simple affair with less than 30 guests, and William and Joelle spent more time catching up with their friends than anything. It was pretty amusing to see them tell their friends about how they met, and both their versions were quite different.”

Destination Wedding At Infinity Chapel Conrad Bali

We couldn’t wait to share this story with you. First off, Esther and Kennard make such a beautiful couple. Then of course we are still awestruck and amazed at how they planned the entire wedding without a wedding planner all the way from London. Thanks, Terralogical, for sharing these beautiful photos with us.

Esther: “I have always wanted a laid-back and intimate destination wedding, an event that is more of a collective vacation where our closest family and friends can sit back, relax and have a great time. And I can’t tell you what a perfect decision that was. Both of us live in London and most of our family and friends were based in Malaysia, the UK and US. Bali has always been on my ‘to do’ list so we settled on that beautiful island.

“Being from a fashion background myself and Ken from actuarial, we were both extremely picky in terms of location, decoration details, dresses, food, photography, videography, and most importantly, our budget. With all these in mind, we decided to plan the wedding all by ourselves from the UK. We obviously had a bit of a challenge pulling it off from halfway across the world without a wedding planner. It took a lot of courage, patience, time and perseverance to do this all on our own. Nevertheless, everything turned out perfect!

“The venue was more beautiful than we could have imagined; it was a dream come true. We recited our vows during sunset at the beautiful Infinity Chapel overlooking the Indian Ocean and had our reception at Metis restaurant overlooking the lotus and rice fields. Every single moment of my wedding was memorable, from the moment I walked down the aisle with my dad to reciting our vows to our first dance.

“Our inspiration was classic and romantic yet simple with a touch of elegance, something that suited both our tastes and personalities. We incorporated a lot of DIY and the utmost attention to detail in our wedding decorations. Both Ken and I designed and printed our wedding invites and programmes together. I must say it was definitely the most time-consuming part of our wedding planning; we wanted them to be clean, modern and personal. We also put our own creative flair on all the décor, including hanging fairy lights as our reception backdrop.

“My mother handmade my dream veil just by looking at pictures of my dress, and it suited my dress perfectly. My cousin hand-carried my peony bouquet from Kuala Lumpur. The tables were decorated with romantic candles and flowers – blush pink, white and ivory roses, baby’s breath, spray roses, lisianthus, carnations and snap dragon in a mixture of bottles and jars. Our wedding was indeed magical. Our photographers and videographers did such an impeccable job capturing the beauty and feel of the event. We were so blessed with amazing vendors and most importantly having the people that are close to our hearts by our side on this special occasion. We couldn’t have asked for more. It was truly a dream wedding.”

Tips from the bride: “If you are planning a destination wedding it is extremely important to do your research. View vendors’ portfolios online, check references and reviews. It’s necessary to have credible vendors that you are comfortable with. Communication with your vendors is important, whether it is through emails or video calls. You need to make sure they clearly understand your vision. Planning this wedding has been, without a doubt, the best experience my husband and I have had since getting engaged. Although the road hasn’t always been easy, the tough parts can’t compare to the joy of celebrating our wedding in Bali. All I can say is it was completely worth it.”

Esther has one of the most beautiful voices ever. It makes us want to watch the whole video and of course, kudos to Bali Metro DigiArt for making the video so seamless.

Red String Of Fate

The beauty of having both a set of photos and an accompanying video is that the photos really come to life once you’ve watched the video. It gives them a deeper meaning, one you probably won’t realise if you’ve never heard the story. This story is mostly fictional but still beautiful, especially the ‘Red String’ scene; we absolutely love it. Read more about the Red String of Fate here. There is actually a Taiwanese serial called ‘Endless Love’ that revolves around the same concept.

thePhotograph: “High school is one of those memories we treasure. Meyla joined a band as a vocalist and that was where she met Rangga, but it wasn’t until years later that they got in touch again.

“They did their bridal portraits and video even though Rangga was working someplace else and on a tight schedule. Meyla did most of the coordinating and we are glad that all went well.

“Both the photos and video were taken in four full days – two consecutive days followed by a day’s break, then another two days. Can you imagine how exhausting that was for the couple? But they did it. Meyla and Rangga actually seemed to enjoy the acting.

“Our stylist had conceptualised it according to the couple’s characteristics. The couple brought their own outfits based on the recommendations. One of our favorites was the ‘Red String’ shot. It was something new that we explored and we loved it!”

The Beauty Of Istanbul and Santorini

Beautiful places and a lovely love story that were very well captured both in photos and words by Axioo; we’ll let them share it with you:

Axioo: “Here are some pictures of Trishia and Johan from their bridal portraits that were shot in Istanbul and Santorini. As a city, Istanbul is stunning. It holds so many historical treasures, amazing palaces right in the city, and remnants of the Ottoman Empire. As a photographer, I recommend shooting in Istanbul as it offers so many exciting places, and as a permanent tourist, I recommend visiting this city that is vibrant by day and festive by night. The Spice Market, the stunning mosques, Bosphorus Strait and the delicious selection of seafood are only a few reasons that will keep me coming back for more.

“‘Beautiful’ acquires a brand new definition on the most picture perfect island of Santorini. With its cobalt blue lagoons, brick red sand and dove white buildings, Santorini looks like a talented artist’s painting of perfection. It was not my first time there, and the memorable adventure we had – including staying at one of the best hotels on the island, Katikies Hotel – is one I would like to repeat again.

“For most of you, this would just be another set of pretty pictures. But for me, they are memories. Trishia and Johan didn’t fall in love at first sight. They didn’t have the smoothest beginning, nor did they have the steadiest of relationships. They were on again and off again, until one day they decided to be on again for the rest of their lives. Now when I look at them, I cannot imagine them being with anyone else. I guess relationships are like that – nothing good ever really comes about that easily or instantly. It takes some honest effort, but it pays off.”

A Promise

This video is a man’s promise to his fiancée. We like how he pondered the meaning of life and marriage during his recent trip to Tokyo with Connie, and we couldn’t have phrased it better. It’s really worth a look (and a thought). What exactly is marriage to you? We understand how you can easily get so excited about the gowns, theme and décor but did you put just as much thought into your vows and the union you are about to enter into? It’s a brand new year and we wanted to start on the right note. Plan your wedding with a real understanding of what marriage is; it will help you keep things in perspective. Darren, thanks for reaching out to us and sharing these beautiful thoughts.

Serenaded In Paris

Destination bridal portraits in Paris by Gallerie CK. www.theweddingnotebook.com

It seems like every photographer who goes to Paris comes back with something fresh. Paul of Gallerie CK brought us back a romantic city filled with music serenading the newlyweds. Even though the couple are doctors by profession and used to ridiculous hours, waking up at three-ish in the morning to begin styling still sounded absurd. Shoots like this can start from as early as six in the morning and last till late at night. Enjoy this beautiful set of photos; it’s indeed a feast for the eyes.

Hot Air Balloons And A Helipad

Photo by Marlon Capuyan Photography. www.theweddingnotebook.com

We don’t know about you but we have always found rooftops and helipads romantic. It is one of those places where we can hide away with our loved ones from the busyness of the city, and we like how the view, and perhaps the wind up there, give us hope for tomorrow. We love the colours of the hot air balloons here too! Though you can see a Malaysian flag, these gorgeous photos were actually taken in the Philippines by Marlon Capuyan.

Gatsby-Inspired Bridal Portraits

Gatsby Inspired Bridal Portraits by RV Mitra Photography. www.theweddingnotebook.com

We have seen a lot of Gatsby-styled shoots but this is probably the first time we have seen a real bridal couple do it. This absolutely stunning set of photos by RV Mitra reflects class and drama, the 1920s are the ideal period through which one can display their love of a bygone era, with its interesting mix of opulence and innocence. The Tap Room and Champagne Room of The Manila Hotel was the perfect location, thanks to their timeless and distinctive interiors that suited the ‘roaring 20s’ theme perfectly.

Journey To Rome

Destination bridal portraits in Rome. Andrew Yep Photographie. www.theweddingnotebook.com

It’s one of the most beautiful cities in the world, one that has long marvelled people with its magnificent architecture including palaces, temples and arenas. Many buildings were left in ruins when the Roman Empire fell in the 5th century, and it wasn’t until the early 19th century, when interest in the great ancient empire started to grow, that monuments like the Arch of Titus were excavated and restored. Today, the city is absolutely stunning and definitely a great place for bridal portraits.

Andrew Yep: “Ning is an old friend whom I met during her younger sister Grace’s wedding. When it was Ning’s turn to get hitched, she texted me to say we were flying to Rome for her bridal portraits. Zane is from Singapore while Ning is from Thailand. Rome is indeed one of the most beautiful cities in Europe.”

DIY Vintage Travel Themed Ceremony

John Lim Photography. www.theweddingnotebook.com

John Lim Photography. www.theweddingnotebook.com

Another couple from Singapore nailed it when they chose a vintage travel theme for their wedding ceremony. Despite the fact that it was in a traditional church, they managed to pull off the theme very well. Their invitations and wedding favours were DIY, and we have to applaud Frances for being one of the rare brides to wear a short wedding dress. Of course, we’ve also got to thank John Lim for sharing these photos with us.

Frances: “We wanted our wedding to be different and something that represented us. The concept behind the wedding is vintage, something that we’ve always loved and that is a part of our life. Even the church is apparently the oldest Teochew church in Singapore.

“We used a VW Kombi as our bridal car and our own 1976 Vespa Sprint Veloce as part of the decorations. We welcomed our guests with things like maps, suitcases, etc. around the reception table, to represent travelling, which we love. To make our lunch area cosier, we had long tables instead of the usual round ones and Tiffany chairs.

“My most memorable moment was seeing the joy in my family and friends, as they shared my big day with me.”

Tips from the bride: “Think of something that represents you or something that you love the most, and work around it. Always plan ahead and give yourself time.”
