Love Stories

Childhood Sweethearts Marry After 23 Years Apart

www.theweddingnotebook.com.Photography by History Studio. Childhood sweethearts marry after 23 years apart

This is definitely not a story you hear every day. While puppy love often fades, it didn’t for Sarah Ho and Wilson Ng, who tied the knot at The Repulse Bay, Hong Kong, more than 20 years after they first met as children.

Sarah formerly a designer at Paul Smith and Cath Kidston told the Hong Kong South China Morning Post, “Our mums were best friends and when they met, all the kids used to play together. I remember clearly that Wilson was my partner for this silly game we used to play. When his family left for America, I refused to partner up with any other boy. In fact, I stopped playing that game for good.”

Years later, with Sarah studying fashion design at Central Saint Martins, London, and Wilson pursuing his career as an accountant in the United States, a nudge from destiny caused their paths to cross once more.

When one of Wilson’s brothers got married, Sarah asked her mother for Wilson’s telephone number to congratulate him. She texted him, he texted back, and they never stopped.

Having lost touch with Sarah when his family relocated to the States, Wilson confessed that as he was growing up, he missed Sarah once in a while.

“Without realising it, a small part of me always thought of her as the perfect girl. Imagine my surprise when one day, after 23 years of silence, I finally got to talk to her, albeit electronically,” he said. “I knew I had probably put her on a pedestal, but after getting to know her better, I realised that I could never have imagined how great she really was … I couldn’t wait another second to see her.”

Sarah soon realised Wilson was all she could think about, and decided to visit him. But before she got around to it, Wilson turned up in London.

“I knew that with each passing day, it was a missed opportunity to meet her and make my life complete,” he said. “The realisation came 10 minutes before I bought a ticket for a long ride to a country I’d never been to, to see a girl I hadn’t met in all those years.”

He showed up in a suit and with flowers. Although they hadn’t seen each other for more than 20 years, Sarah never forgot her first love. “When we reunited, he looked exactly the way I had imagined and had a smile that almost made me pass out,” she said. “I couldn’t believe that this incredible guy had been in my life all this time and I didn’t even know it.”

The day after he returned to the States, Wilson rang a jeweller. Less than two months later, he was on his way to London again, but this time with a ring in his pocket.

When he proposed, Sarah said yes immediately. “I know this sounds cheesy, but I really felt that he was the one the moment I met him again,” she said. “It was as if he just appeared out of nowhere and all I could think about was how lucky I was that he found a way back into my life.”

Wedding Jitters

Having wedding jitters the day before your wedding? Panic attacks? This video shows the groom getting wedding jitters the day before his wedding, in a funny way.

Football fans in Malaysia will definitely know the groom. It is ‘Astro Supersports’ and ‘Football Overload’ host Roshan Narayan.

Like the humorous person he is, Roshan wanted something different for his wedding video that fits his character and personality. Inspired by the movies ‘Looper’ and ‘Inception’, and with help from his ‘Football Overload’ co-host, Adam C, the wedding video is hilarious.

Some of you may not know this but Roshan supports Manchester United. This video is a must-watch for Manchester United fans out there, as there is a special appearance by legendary Manchester United right back Paul Parker.

Storytelling, The Stylish Way

Azlan Iskandar, one of Malaysia’s world-class squash athletes, wed Ung Yiu Lin, founder of Shoes, Shoes, Shoes, and Klutched at the end of last year. We are so proud to feature this video by Shiroku Production, especially because our creative director Chaiyen and our designer Wee-Mei were commissioned to help create it.

The video tells the story of how the couple met. They didn’t want a typical sweet, lovey-dovey video. It doesn’t represent them very well, and they wanted a slightly dark, fantasy feel. So they went with a Tim Burton-esque style.

Believe us, Wee-Mei went to a lot of effort to illustrate all these graphics. And even though we were the ones who came up with most of the graphics, we are still very much in awe of the final results, and of how the team at Shiroku Production made everything come to life by animating it and adding sounds.

For Better Or For Worse

This photoshoot wins brownie points because QL is a Manchester United fan. Inspired by them, we’re going to feature a whole week of sports-themed weddings. Read their full story here.

Briefly: QL promised his wife he would never bring friends over to watch football because of the mess that they always leave behind. So one day, he and a friend decided to skip work to watch the replay of a big match during the day, while his wife Sharon was at work. It was a Manchester United vs. Chelsea game, and as you can see from this photoshoot, it was a very stressful 90 or more minutes.

The nerves from a missed opportunity, and finally seeing Wayne Rooney dribble past a few opponents and score a goal definitely caused a lot of excitement. Needless to say, there was a mess that they didn’t want Sharon to find out about.

We believe this serves as a very strong reminder and warning to both QL and Sharon – Sharon needs to know this is what she must put up with when she marries a football fanatic, while QL just needs to learn not to mess things up too much, or convert his wife into a fan.

We also love the colours in this Trash the Dress photoshoot!

Eliska was a wedding coordinator in the Philippines before moving to Australia, so you know she won’t expect anything less than perfection for her own wedding day. She and Aaron wanted to get married in Sydney to mark the start of their new life there. A lot of love and detail were poured into their wedding, and we love how their family and friends came from afar to join them for the celebrations.

Eliska: “I’ve always loved peach and vintage so we just played with both. We ended up with peach, blush and grey as our colours. And then it all became like, rustic chic, which was perfect for the outdoor ceremony. To match the theme, we had laser-cut invitations from Etsy. This wedding is filled with DIY items, like the felt escort tags, photo-booth and confetti bags.

The day was very memorable for me. But I guess my favourite moment would be when I walked down the aisle. I felt like, “This is it!” and I saw our loved ones all there to celebrate with us. That was the best gift for me.”

Country Vintage

www.theweddingnotebook.com. Photography by Perfect Shot. Country vintage boutonnière

Is it just us or have we really been seeing lots of green in recent weddings? We love the colour combination of green and white. It gives a kind of simplicity and natural beauty that sometimes other colours cannot give.

Siow Ling and Hong Tatt got married in a traditional church with stained glass windows and wooden pews. They chose a foliage green tone and matched it with cream to help create a country vintage feel. We love the vintage metal frame buttons on the boutonnieres, and the flowers. The bride completed the look when she walked down the aisle in a vintage, mermaid-cut lace gown with a high collar.

Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (KLPac) is the centre of performing arts in Malaysia, a place where people can truly express themselves through theatre, music and dance. Cherrie, who works in a bank, and William, who is from the IT industry, chose to show their love for each other in the gardens of KLPac. Everything looks like such fun – a true reflection of this couple. We especially like the photobooth’s big heart-shaped backdrop.

Family Affairs

Nicholas Leong Photography. Malayalee Wedding Ceremony

Traditional Indian weddings are always rich in detail, colour and culture. We can’t help but love the vibrant emotions in these big family affairs that include everyone!

Dhanya: “For the wedding ceremony, we went for something classic, traditional and elegant, our primary colours being white and gold with accents of maroon and deep purple. It was a Malayalee wedding ceremony, and although we kept the traditional elements, there were many contemporary features present as well.

“One of the most memorable moments for us was seeing each other for the first time at the altar. Another was when we finally tied the knot after nine long years of dating!

“For the wedding dinner, we wanted a romantic and intimate vibe. We chose the venue as it perfectly fit the ambience that we were looking for. One of the unique things at the dinner was a candy buffet. The guests, young and old, thoroughly enjoyed it!

“The favours were DIY small, square, deep purple boxes topped with a customised tag. In each favour box was a Ferrero Rocher chocolate.

“We also had a DIY photobooth which was a treat too. Not to mention the groom himself was the DJ for the night.”

Tips for brides-to-be: “Do not stress (easier said than done, I know). But once it’s all over, you’ll realise how silly it was to have been petty, and fussed over the smallest things. On that day, the truth is, no one realises if the flowers were the exact shade you picked out or not. So PLAN, DELEGATE and LET GO. Do not micromanage!”

One Voice

This is an amazing idea that’s never crossed our minds before. Put together by Crazy Monkey Studio, the video shows how profound it can be when the wedding vows are edited together instead of being shown separately. For the very first time, we felt two people putting aside their differences and coming together as one voice.

This wedding truly is a celebration of friends and loved ones. From the wedding planning by good friend Theodora Soh to the invitations and stationery, from the flowers and décor to the cakes and desserts, everything was put together by friends of the bridal couple. How very blessed they are to have been showered with so much help from family and friends.

Besides the beautiful details, we also love the people and the emotions that were captured. You can almost hear the music, the tears and the laughter. And looking at all the photos and watching the video, you realise that is exactly what it was like.

Charlene: “Standing outside the church was a big moment for me as this was the church that I grew up in. The design of the dress had also been kept a secret from the groom until the moment the church doors opened. It was definitely a moment of great anticipation.

“We had over 60 guests, including those who had flown in from Australia, America, Hong Kong and the Philippines, and it was just great knowing that our loved ones had made such an effort to share our special day with us. Since ours had been a long distance relationship, our wedding was another step for us to be together, and finally being in the same country at the same time.

“We had a travel and nature theme, which was very apt for us. Jason lived in Sydney while I lived in Dubai. I was a flight attendant and so I traveled a lot. Jason would fly around and meet me in the cities where I had stopovers, meeting me whenever and wherever he could, and we also travelled together frequently.

www.theweddingnotebook.com. Photography by One Eye Click. Green vintage wedding

“Our save-the-dates for the wedding were flight boarding passes, wedding invitations were paper planes, and favours were luggage tags that our guests can actually use. We are also very earthy and green people, and that’s why we chose the colour green for our theme.

“We wanted a cosy and intimate reception, and we fell in love with the high ceilings and organic theme of the restaurant, as well as its lighting.”

Bridal tip: “Plan ahead and don’t stress. Enjoy the day, and let your hair down and party!”
