Love Stories

The Beauty Of Traditions

 b

Benny is from Chicago. He moved to Hong Kong a few years back for work, and that is where he met Marina.

We love this wedding to bits, especially how they included all the traditional customs yet kept it so much fun. It’s so beautiful to see all the bride’s family dress up in ‘Qun Kua’ and ‘Qipao’ including the grandma. They laughed, cried and went all out eccentric. They were just so authentic in front of the camera, which made these photos by Julian Wainwright extra amazing.

Vintage Carnival

Photography by Jonathan Ong. www.theweddingnotebook.com

Photography by Jonathan Ong. www.theweddingnotebook.com

This wedding is awesome on so many levels. A good location, and a very inspiring, fun theme and team! And of course we have this set of very beautiful images from Jonathan Ong. Sometimes we feel as though all of heaven rejoices whenever there’s a couple who celebrates with a wedding that is true to themselves.

We know it’s not fair; the bride had a team of wedding designers. Which got us thinking, maybe sometimes we just don’t trust our event planners enough when they give us crazy, conceptual ideas, because we think no one has done it before. Maybe sometimes we just need to dive in with a leap of faith if we feel that it’s right, because honestly, even the event planners can’t fully imagine it too.

Kirstyn: “We booked The Substation not long after getting engaged. The space is amazing and suited us perfectly. The whole look and feel of the day started with inspiration from The Substation. As for the ceremony location, Adam and I didn’t really want a garden or beach or anywhere typical, but we wanted a venue that could facilitate the carnival. The old Newport Rail Workshops were perfect, plus it was just three minutes’ drive away from our reception venue!

“The whole wedding was vintage carnival-inspired. We chose the 1930s and 1940s in particular so that there was a distinct era and continuity throughout the whole day. Adam and I both love theatre – I love the performance side and Adam loves the actual spaces. So we wanted the ceremony to have a dramatic feel about it. Our celebrant, Jon Von Goes, was hilarious and really set the tone for the rest of the day. We even had a few guests say that it felt like ‘the show had begun.’

“Adam and I love things with an earthy, rustic, organic feeling so we tried to have that throughout. The centrepieces ran the whole length of the tables with many different elements so that they were not only eye-catching as you walked in, but when you sat down there were lots of details to admire. There were large gold candlestick holders, moss, flowers in jars and bottles, pinwheels, carnival terrariums with merry-go-rounds and elephants, and lots of candles. Then we had a huge ceiling installation that had large balls of flowers, wire balls, moss balls and pendant lights. It looked like something out of a movie.

“Adam is a chef so it was really important to him that the food be outstanding. Quite often meals made en masse lack the personality that restaurant food has, but our food was fabulous and full of character.

“All of the details throughout the whole day made our day special and enhanced the experience for our guests; we had so many people comment that everything about the day was so typically us, which is what it’s about at the end of the day – us.

“Adam and I had the greatest night. We didn’t feel rushed or as though we spent the whole night hosting, we simply enjoyed the party we had worked so hard to put together and it was magical.”

Tips from the bride: “As a wedding planner, this is what I do for other brides all the time, but after experiencing it firsthand, I cannot stress enough how critical having a coordinator was to the enjoyable day we all had.”

The first time we walked into the Time Tunnel Museum at Cameron Highlands, we knew right away that we just had to do a photoshoot here. This undiscovered place is filled with gems of yesteryears. Gone are the days of museum displays in glass cases. Here, you literally feel as if you’ve walked through a time tunnel and gone back in time. Thank God for our photographer, Jennifer of Jspy Photography, and the team, who were game enough to make the trip up to Cameron Highlands with us.

Chaiyen: “The surroundings are rather dark, so for the casual look we styled the couple in brighter colours. We brought Coke bottles for props as their wedding theme revolved around that. It is quite a journey from Kuala Lumpur, so we stayed two nights to ensure we would have sufficient time and enough rest before the shoot. We were worried that the place would be a bit too dark, but everything turned out perfect.”

Needless to say, we barely had enough time to do the beauty of this place justice. So the next time you are in Cameron Highlands, please visit the Time Tunnel Museum. You just need to pay a ridiculously low entry fee, and we promise you will go Instagram-crazy here.

True Love Is A Big Deal

Jaja Lifestyle Photography. www.theweddingnotebook.com

It’s not every day we see a relationship that lasts 10 years, so we’re truly happy for Janel and Paulo, who not only found a lover in each other, but a best friend whom they will keep by their side forever. And with that, we bring you this beautiful set of photos taken by Jaja Lifestyle Photography.

From the bride: “The whole wedding was unforgettable but some of the most special moments were when we recited our personal vows, and when I walked down the aisle and saw our families, friends and my grandparents, and Pau waiting for me at the altar. It has always been my dream to walk down the aisle in a pretty white gown. When my grandfather danced with me during the reception, I cried. I felt at that very moment that no matter what happens, I would always be his little girl.

“We wanted a theme that was not too over the top and décor heavy, so we chose polka dots and stripes since it is simple, yet very cute and easy to match. As it was summer, salmon pink, seafoam green and mint seemed suitable. Pau and I never thought of having our reception indoors. We wanted to be different from the weddings we’ve attended. We love the idea of backyard receptions because they seem very simple, comfortable and fun.

“Together with my cousin and friends, we made a newspaper to share our story as a couple with our guests. We wanted to share with them our 10 years of being together. We had different games that involved all of our guests throughout the night, for example trivia questions for guests to get to know us better, and Jenga as an alternative to tossing the bridal bouquet.

“Prepare a lookbook of how you envision your wedding and reception to be. It helps you put everything together and match your ideas.”

Putting aside all the pretty things, what we truly want to celebrate is this couple. You have to listen to the vows they make to each other in the video compiled by IGS Cinema to understand the love that they have for each other. It suddenly dawned upon us that a pretty wedding is but an empty shell if true love is not part of the whole thing.

Definitely not your regular bridal portraits, these cost an estimated USD20,000, and much planning had to be done in advance to ensure that they achieved the results they wanted. Needless to say, the journey there wasn’t easy, and neither were the weather conditions.

This pursuit of the Aurora Borealis, commonly known as The Northern Lights, was made possible by ChuianFeng of Avior Pictures and a team adventurous enough to move out of their comfort zone, not to mention a couple crazy enough to attempt it.

About 280 guests gathered for the wedding of these two photographers, Mildred and Marlon. Decorated with beautiful vintage paraphernalia, the reception was everything the couple wanted – the perks of working in the wedding industry and having friends who understood exactly what they wanted for their wedding.

Mildred: “We wanted to have a very laidback wedding; something that’s not too formal and constricted. A bohemian wedding with a touch of vintage was outright perfect for our personalities. It’s a good thing working in the wedding industry has its perks. We were able to work not only with colleagues but people from the industry whom we already consider friends. Because of their genius, our ideas for our wedding were executed according to our vision. DIY ideas – reception styling, boutonnieres and floral head wreaths – were pulled off with the help of the creative minds of Cuckoo Cloud Concepts.

“The bridal gown was designed by Jerrick Macasocol. But I gave him pointers as to what I would like in my wedding gown. Like, I wanted a flowy bohemian gown made of off-white lace with an open back. It is actually a two-piece dress. The lower gown is actually a skirt that can be removed, with a short knee-length lace dress inside. I asked him to design it that way so I can still use the knee-length dress after the wedding.

“I designed the bridesmaids’ dresses myself, bought the materials, and had them made by a trusted local seamstress here in Cebu. I wanted the gowns to be flowy and easy to move in to maintain the bohemian vibe. I wanted different designs for each of them so they can still use the gowns after the wedding, without having to worry that someone else has the same dress. I went for soft, romantic neutral colours like peach, melon, beige, and cream.”

Countryside Tranquility

Film photography has been making a comeback of late, and if you are a fan you will like this set of bridal portraits that was taken in Nagano, Japan. This is thegaleria’s signature style but it is still the photographer, Brian, who has done an impressive job on his maiden trip to Nagano. Most of what you see is original, untouched-up photos, which makes them even more awesome. We are awed.

Whimsical Celebration

To be honest, when we first stumbled upon this set of photos, we didn’t realise that it was a wedding in Singapore. The flowers and colours used were so rare. The photography style of Ivan Tan definitely did its magic too – the images and emotions look so effortless yet real.

It’s not often we get to see an Asian bridal couple actually relax and enjoy their wedding. We like it when the couple is involved in the décor because it seems as if their wedding is their first special project together.

From the round green and purple paper lanterns, origami cranes and crepe paper flowers, to the pretty centerpieces, colourful buntings and adorable furry green animals, every element had been carefully pieced together by the couple and their friends.

Jia Yin: “It’s hard to pin down a favourite moment – the impromptu sing-along session with the band, secretly-organised party games we weren’t told about, the heartfelt speeches from the best man Hianyi and maid of honour Jess, the endless photobooth madness… At the end of the day, we were just overjoyed that our guests enjoyed themselves.”

Huan Min: “One of my groomsmen, Dalun, surprised me by turning up at my home in the morning when he was supposed to be studying in the States. The feeling really was indescribable.

“We wanted our wedding to be not about us, but about all who have touched our lives, because without these wonderful people we would not be who we are. With the idea of a house party in mind, we chanced upon Food For Thought at Singapore Botanic Gardens and fell in love with the expansive space and wholesome home-style dishes.”

Tips from the bride: “Forget about fairytales, a wedding is a celebration of love and friendship; everything else is cosmetic. If you’re pining for the perfect solitaire and the wind in your hair, you’re setting yourself up for stress and disappointment.

“Take your time to bring together a team who shares your vision and tastes. We were deliberate in asking Ivan to be our photographer, not just because he made great photos but because his philosophy towards photography – to capture moments and interactions as they happened; no second takes – resonated with us.”

Joston and Michelle had a yellow and grey theme for their wedding, and wanted to include those colours in their bridal portraits too. The couple love the outdoors and hikes, so they traveled to the nearest peak and did a little “hike”. We can’t fully express in words how much we love the whole styling and mood of this shoot done by Funky Dali.

Michelle and Joston: “We were convinced about doing a photoshoot with them because we’d viewed their portfolios and really loved their style. The entire experience with Funky Dali felt comfortable and flexible with a lot of freedom for feedback on our ideas.

“The photos turned out very natural and beyond our expectations. We were very impressed with the outcome. It had the rustic style and candid moments of both of us, just the way we wanted it to be. Our family and guests liked it very much too!”

We’re probably biased, but we take pride in our selected list of photographers, passionate people who take the time to know the couples they photograph, and conceptualise something personal for each of them.

We love these pieces because they look almost like art – quiet and still yet full of emotion, both from this couple’s movements and their gaze. We’ve been told diagonal lines add dynamic to photographs, which those pretty legs sure do.

When it comes to photoshoots in Santorini, Greece, there is a pre-conception of how the photos will turn out – couples cuddling and looking sweet as they pose overlooking the Aegean Sea under the big blue sky.

Thankfully, this photographer wants more for each couple that comes his way. After looking at the attire they had in mind, he knew Ting and Hin were after a more stylish approach.

In the beginning, the couple had their doubts as to whether Greece was the right backdrop for what they wanted, but the photographer assured them it was, and they are more than pleased with the results.
