This wedding took place a while back but we were so impressed by it that we just had to share! Look at how timeless it is. From what we’ve observed, creative weddings usually only happen when the couple has full confidence and trust in their designer and give them the freedom to explore. Thanks, One Eye Click, for capturing these very detailed illustrations by The Joy Troopers.

Hanzhi of The Joy Troopers: “Song and Dixuan had a backyard wedding just behind Spruce Café, surrounded by tall trees and greens. It wasn’t hard to imagine squirrels running around, wild hare popping by, and little chicks dancing about. The design brief was ‘garden party’, and I was given the freedom to decide what to do with it.

“They loved the black and white drawings I had done for my past projects, and that kind of determined the overall look of the illustrations: monochromatic and detailed with a sense of humour. I injected the couple’s features into two of the squirrels – a beard on the squirrel groom and big eyes on the squirrel bride – and gave the animals humanistic traits with different roles to play. The animals were then drawn on a much bigger scale to be put up around the wedding solemnisation area.”

Song: “We tried to keep our wedding simple and fuss free for our friends and family. I got a few close friends to help with the setup the morning before the ceremony, and the moment everything was done, the sense of achievement and relief was overwhelming.

“We chose the Spruce because it has a beautiful backyard with tall trees and the forest as a backdrop. It was perfect for a garden party, and we were really delighted to see Hanzhi inject our characteristics into her ink illustrations of the animals to make it uniquely Xuan and Song.

“We did not get any favours for our guests, but we used the illustrations to make place cards. We then filled each card with personal messages for our guests because we wanted them to know what they mean to us, and thank them for being there to celebrate with us.

“While The Joy Troopers worked on the illustrations, my DIY role was to get them cut perfectly. Xuan also made a little bowtie for me that matched her tailor made dress from Ong Shunmugam, a contemporary womenswear label that focuses on sartorial construction instead of fast fashion.”

Tips from the bride: “Be sure to set a budget and stick to it. Too many things appear important, so decide on what’s manageable with your other half. Don’t over stretch, stay positive and enjoy the process!”
