Sometimes the best-laid plans are when there are fewer or close to no plans. These newlyweds pulled off their cosy garden wedding, including DIY projects such as the ring pillow and wedding arch, in surprisingly little time!

The garden surroundings were the perfect complement to their simple and clean colour palette. Keeping with the nature theme, the bridal bouquet was understated and gorgeous, with eucalyptus branches standing in contrast to the white and cream flowers. Also juxtaposed against the green and white shades were the wooden textures and accents. Meanwhile, the bridal party wore grey to keep things neutral and ensure that the focus was on the bridal couple’s celebration of their love for each other. Thanks for these beautifully captured shots, MunKeat Photography.

Ming Lee: “We didn’t have a specific theme, but we knew we wanted something clean and earthy, with colours such as green, white and brown. We loved how our wedding reflected us and wanted to keep everything simple and intimate.

“We had a customised wooden box, with our names and wedding date engraved. For our ring pillow, I cross-stitched the design, and my mum made it into a pillow, which made it really special. Instead of writing our vows on pieces of paper, we bought two notebooks, and made our own ‘vow booklets’. We drew on the covers and wrote our vows in them. We had a ‘Vow Box Ceremony’ where we placed our vows into the box, made a pact to open it on our anniversary every year, and renew our vows by writing in the notebooks.

“As for the wedding planning, our family and friends described us as ‘too relaxed’! After booking our wedding locations, photographer and videographer a year in advance, we started our ‘proper’ wedding planning only about two months before our wedding date! We got our wedding invites done a month before the wedding, I got my dresses two to three weeks prior, and my heels the evening before our wedding! Thank goodness our wedding planner, Moments, was amazing – knowing that the team was very reliable kept us calm all the way!

“To be honest we were very proud of our wedding backdrop! The two of us had folded and strung a total of 1000 paper cranes, and with the help of our wedding planner, were able to put them up onto the arch. The entire setup was just what we had imagined, and our planners meticulously arranged each string of cranes to create our ‘love’ shaped pattern.”

On senbazuru, one thousand origami cranes (千羽鶴): “Legend has it that anyone who folds 1000 paper cranes will be granted his or her most desired wish. It’s also a wish for a thousand years of prosperity and happiness for a newly married couple. In Japanese culture, it’s traditionally given as a wedding gift by the bride’s father. Of course, being the last minute people that we are (in our defence, work had been very hectic!), we started stringing the 1000 cranes only two nights before our wedding. Our backs ached, our fingers were repeatedly pricked, we lacked sleep – I was so close to just letting it go! But then my husband looked me in the eye and said, ‘We can do this. We will do this together!’ And I’m so glad we did!”
