Alia Bastamam is a homegrown designer who has finally come out with her bridal collection. A modern, simple, elegant, understated and fine collection, it reminisces on the classic allure of different periods, and presents them in a ‘now’ style.
For this collection of bridal looks, Alia drew much inspiration from Liz Taylor’s many wedding dresses. Translated into the present, Liz Taylor’s hourglass cuts morphed into more streamlined and less constricted designs. Alia was also inspired by New York socialite Minnie Cushing’s Oscar de la Renta piece during her wedding in 1967.
The Alia Bastamam 2013 Bridal Collection is sheer beauty, boasting a wide variety of designs, from modest ‘kurung’ cuts and embellished veils to dangerously low back gowns. The most important thing is comfort, insists Alia, adding: “Looking comfortable is one thing, but it is most important for the bride to feel comfortable.”
Each season when I design, I always have a woman in mind. For my first bridal collection, there are inspirations, but the most important inspirations are definitely the brides whom I have dressed.”
