We are in love with this elaborately decorated wedding that drew inspiration from the glamorous era of 1920s Old Shanghai styled by Wishing Tree. With its deep red hues, balanced by regal turquoise and green, textured patterns and lights, everything was brought together the way only a couple with a design and architectural background could. Even more impressive, they planned all this while in Melbourne, as they’re based there!

No detail was left out – from the table centerpieces to the photobooth wall, from the flowers to the favours. They even hired vendors and performers to add to the oriental experience. Many thanks to Peter Herman Photography for capturing the intricate details and breathtaking colours of this wedding!

Yi-Ann: “We decided on a traditional yet unconventional Chinese banquet reception based on an Old Shanghai theme. We didn’t want to overwhelm the reception with the colour red just because it was an oriental wedding, so we used a variety of red hues contrasted with turquoise and green, which worked beautifully with our theme. Seeing every aspect of the reception for the first time was so exciting, but what made it even more memorable was having our nearest and dearest share and celebrate our momentous day with us!

“Howard and I were very involved in every aspect of the planning and execution of both our Melbourne and Malaysian receptions. We wanted both receptions to reflect our personalities and attention to detail, especially with our background in architecture and design. We had a great understanding of each other’s roles when it came to the wedding; he was very supportive and allowed me to decide on the majority of the décor elements. He, on the other hand, designed all the necessary graphics – such as our invites, table numbers, descriptions for our traditional candy stations, and the graphics projected on the screens.

“Our wedding favours were customised to suit our theme, and looked great with the table settings. We had vibrant sandalwood hand fans engraved with our wedding hashtag, which was a big hit with the ladies! For the men we had chocolates by Grant Hyatt, each wrapped with a strip of oriental floral wrapping paper and sealed with our personalised wedding stickers.”

Tips from the bride: “Do find the time throughout your big day to take in all of the details and to really soak up every moment of joy and love!”
