This beautiful white colonial building, now converted into a fine restaurant and with a lovely garden outside, was perfect for this wedding. The couple added just enough detail to complement the existing architecture – sometimes simplicity is the key to such a beautiful venue. Thanks, Andy Phe, for this lovely set of photos.

Cheng Cheng: “It drizzled earlier in the morning which got us worried as our wedding ceremony was going to be held later that afternoon. It was a blessing that we got clear skies when the time came, and that all of our invited guests were able to attend and witness our marriage.

“Walking down the aisle with my father and that moment when my dad passed me over to Kim Yew was overwhelming and memorable. Our first dance was memorable too; it was a once in our lifetime experience. We made it a point to go for dance classes so that we could nail our first dance, and we did. Definitely an achievement we earned together.

“For the theme, we went for a tropical meets rustic concept. Colours that came to mind were pastel brown, green and red, and tropical plants such as heliconia, window leafed monster and banana leaves. As I’m a big fan of the Volkswagen van, we got one parked at the entrance of The Old Courthouse as a photobooth for our guests.

“We chose The Old Courthouse as our venue simply because it is one of the oldest heritage buildings in Kuching, and it definitely fit the rustic concept that we were going for. Besides that, we also managed to capture some portraits along Carpenter Street, which is one of the oldest streets in the city and vibrant with many hidden gems.”

Tips from the bride: “Acquire inspiration from wedding magazines such as The Wedding Notebook, websites, Pinterest and books – one of my favourites is ‘DIY Wedding Manual by Lisa Sodeau’. Start planning early and allow ample time to work on the wedding ideas and preparations, especially if you’re thinking of going DIY. Lastly and most importantly, appreciate and enjoy every moment, and have fun on your wedding day!”
