Unlike the cinemagraph technique, which normally has very subtle repeated movements, Douglas Ho plays with more obvious movements, which really suits this fun couple. We love how Douglas continually surprises us with great ideas because he refuses to use the same technique for every couple.
Douglas: “Yen Hau is actually my photography sensei who’s also the founder of My Road Planner, a platform that promotes local tourism spots. Since he’s such an expert in photography, I knew a common approach wouldn’t be his cup of tea, hence we decided to shoot a series of moving images rather than still images.
“As a designer, I do a lot of art direction and TV commercials, thus I’m greatly influenced by the cropping and colour grading of commercial video treatments. I love my photos in 16:9, rather desaturated, grainy and underexposed, close to the quality of conventional film.
“We spent 4-6 days travelling, exploring and shooting; it sounds easy but the editing and treatment were quite hectic and time consuming. The photos were mostly taken in East Coast Malaysia (Kuala Terengganu and Kelantan), as it was the first place my sensei explored when he started learning photography. Even when he initiated My Road Planner, East Coast Malaysia was the top local tourism route on the list.
“To design a unique pre-wedding album for any couple, listen to their stories and learn their characteristics to understand them, then go back with a proposal and approach that fit them. This pretty much relies on your aesthetics, content, experience and archive as well as your references – the more references you have, the easier it will be to come up with a concept.”
