How often do we get to see an old school Chinese wedding, with all the drama of full traditional bridal attire including the coronet? This couple embraced their roots and culture for their chip san leong, starting with the gatecrashing ceremony of the groom and his groomsmen to pick up the bride, and finishing with a tea ceremony. The result was not only a joyous union, but also colourful and bright photos reflective of the mood on the day – thanks to hellojanelee!

Caryn: “Since we had a simple ROM, we decided to go full traditional and dramatic for our actual wedding ceremony! I wore the traditional kwa with coronet (headgear), while my husband wore the magua with changpao, both for the gatecrashing ceremony and the march in during the dinner reception. As we have friends of different races and cultures, we thought it would be fun for them to experience a full traditional Chinese wedding, plus it’ll look great in photos!

“The groomsmen played their part by wearing the traditional Chinese tunic (ala the movie Ip Man), while the bridesmaids wore cheongsams custom made in their preferred styles but using the same fabric designs that I picked.”

Tips from the bride: “Although we’re both from the events industry, planning for our big day wasn’t easy! We were lucky to have friends with experience, and they helped to smooth things out, especially on our wedding day, because there was no time for us to do anything else.

“Hire a planner/coordinator if budget permits, otherwise seek advice and assistance from your friends/family, as you will not be able to do everything on your own! No matter how well planned a wedding is, things may go a little awry, but it’s okay. Things happen so fast, you sometimes won’t even realise it because nothing else matters more than marrying the love of your life!”
