The tea ceremony is often quite emotional and sentimental, celebrating the union of two people and two families becoming one. What’s lovely about this intimate ceremony is that it also makes for beautiful photos. These newlyweds chose hues of blue to contrast the traditional red tones, and included vintage elements such as a Volkswagen Beetle wedding car. And after all the fun and games were done, there was even a Malaysian style breakfast spread – nasi lemak cups, fresh fruit platters and mee hoon! Mei Lee: “The best thing about our wedding day was the joy it brought to our families and friends. From the beginning of our wedding preparations, we were very clear that it would not just be our day, but also a day to remember and appreciate what the closest people in our lives have done for us, shaping us into who we are today.
“Our wedding was not done in an extravagant way but we ensured that every ceremony was intimate so we could spend more time with our guests. Our Chinese tea ceremony was truly meaningful – besides the preparation, which was done together with our bridesmaids and groomsmen, we also received love, blessings and advice from our families and relatives.
“Even more memorable was how my mum gave us a pair of soft toys during the tea ceremony, instead of the traditional red packets and gold. The story behind it was I once wanted a soft toy when I was really young but my parents couldn’t afford one. So on this special day they bought not one, but two soft toys as a kind of remembrance.”
Tips from the bride: “Know what you want, regardless of what others say and how much it cost (find alternatives but keep to the original intention). Get a good photographer to eternalise the moment, and a good makeup artist to look pretty.”
